Continuing To Build Bridges...

GCAHC MENTORING PROGRAM

Project Description

The purpose of GA-CAHM Mentoring Program is to assist in the area of youth leadership development.  The Program is designed to focus on Georgia high school seniors.  Selected students should have reached the age of 17 (k-11) and should be on track for graduation.  The program will provide such students with opportunities for internships with reputable Caribbean-owned businesses, as well as other business in Georgia.  Opportunities may also be available to place two students in businesses in the Washington, D.C. area, subject to the availability of Caribbean host families in D.C.

The internships should take place before graduation, so as not to interfere with preparation for college or trade school.  The duration of the Program will be one month, preferably during the month of July.  Students will have a primary mentor in the business establishment, who will be responsible for creating learning opportunities and suitable exposure for the student.  At the conclusion of the internship, the mentor will provide a written evaluation to GCAHC of the student’s experience.  The student will also provide a self-evaluation about his or her positive experience and challenges.

Interns will be referred by schools in the metro Atlanta area, Caribbean organizations, groups and individuals.  Initial selection will be based on interviews conducted by members of the GA-CAHM Mentoring Program Committee.  Successful candidates will be prepared for interview with the designated business.  The Committee will assist students with resume preparation and help sharpening their interviewing skills.

The Program will be promoted by press releases to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Georgia Caribbean newspapers and other local newspapers, community T.V. programs such as Caribbean Reports and through radio announcements.  The media will also receive ongoing reports on the success and/or challenges of the project.

Goals and Objectives

The internships will help to prepare students in the following ways:

  • Provide a successful transition from high school into the business world.
  • Help the students to determine a suitable trade or profession to pursue.
  • Motivate students to go on to college or trade schools.
  • Provide interaction with professionals in the work force.
  • Help to build confidence and self-esteem.
